Very nice route in an area full of possibilities. Glacier environment.

Access

Parking Ströden. (Lienz - Matrei) In Matrei, enter the village and take the Virgental valley bottom road until it ends (parking).

Ascent to the refuge

From the car park, follow the forest road that leads to some houses and then to the cableway for the refuge (possibility to load backpacks and skis). Always towards the N, climb first in a wood, then on open land, skirting sideways along potentially dangerous slopes. A last steeper section leads to the Essener-Rostocker refuge (2.30 hours).

Ascent

From the hut always in the N direction, first on falt ground then steeper, you reach the summit ridge and then walk to the summit (3.30 hours; 6 hours).

Descent

Via the ascent route. Crossing: descent on the E slope to the Johannishütte. Via the N face.

Best period: April - may.
