Ascent
From the bottom station skin up the signposted track to the mid-station (Charmillion), firstly to the left of the piste, then to the right, (summer mountain bike trail.) It is also possible to purchase a special “ski randonneurs” ticket for the telecabins, (one way, 6.90€ in 2016) From Charmallion either: Follow the dedicated trail for ski tourers (signposted), which starts just to the right of the Autannes chairlift, up to the top of the same chairlift. Be aware that this trail passes, for a couple of hundred metres, below an area which might be avalanche prone in particularly bad conditions. From the top of the lift go to the Col de Balme hut. After a very short descent, make your way up to the Tête de Balme, easiest if you go up diagonally to the right at first. Or: From Charmallion continue up the main track (4×4 in summer), until it is possible to cut up to the right, taking a line just to the right of the ridge used by the Plan des Reines ski drag, and so up to the summit.
Descent
Basically by the same route or the pistes.
