In the 1930s, Alfred Couttet, known as “La Colaude”, put up the first routes on this crag, with the intention of creating a place where alpinists could learn to climb. He was soon joined by Roger Frison-Roche in this project, considered at the time to be revolutionary. “Les Rochers des Gaillands” are equipped and maintained by the Chamonix guides’ company, which has helped to turn this crag into a “mythical” place.
