Details

Approach 70-90mins

Similar to Henninger : on the true left bank of Valeille, go past the “classics, (Fenillaz, Vertigine Porcellana etc, signposted), 300m after the second bridgre acrosss the river go up the avalanche cone to the foot of the icefall.

Route

The icefall is not very obvious from below but is very broad with stepped ramps, interspersed with ice curtains. This means the grade very much depends on the line taken, especially the curtains. The Damilano-Perroux guidebook gives the route 3+, which is difficult to accept even if there was an exceptional build up of ice. The grade is more like 4 0r 5, (even 5+), depending on the line taken. (N.B. the Giglio guidebook “Effimeri Barbagli” gives the grade III/3-4 with “Super Gran Val” at 5.

Descent

Abseilling from Abalakovs.
