Petite Aiguille d'Ansabère

## Approche

This beautiful route ascends the chimney crack from the fork formed by the Petite Aiguille d'Ansabère and its secondary summit. It was established by Spaniards R. Montaner and J. Vicente in June 1956. The route cleverly uses the weaknesses of the southern wall of the Petite Aiguille d'Ansabère.

### Approach

From Pont Lamary, take a broad walkway to reach the Ansabe huts and follow the trail for the Pétragème pass, passing by the base of Petite Aiguille. It takes 2 hours.

### Route

Go to the bottom of the base in line with the formidable spur named Spigolo d'Ansabère. Begin the climb at the level of a small gendarme, reachable via a short ascending traverse to the right. Ascend the chimney above on a large pitch (IV+) and continue on easier terrain to reach the large chimney crack (UK-3a / US-5.3 then UK-4a / US-5.5). Climb two pitches (UK-5a / US-5.8, V +) and veer right to reach a broad chimney-cave (UK-5a / US-5.8). Climb a crack on its straight side leading under a roof (UK-5a / US-5.8). Cross it (UK-5b / US-5.10a) and belay on a platform a few meters beneath the notch. From there, continue to the north slope and the summit (III/III +). It takes 4 hours.

After the notch, it is possible to traverse west to the descent route.

### Descent

A few meters below the summit (north slope), reach a rappel (30 meters) and descend to the notch between Petite Aiguille and Petit Pic d'Ansabère (II). Via a cairned ledge, reach a short corridor (sometimes snow-covered early in the season) and ascend to the normal route of Petit Pic d'Ansabère. From there, descend the Pétragème pass to reach the Ansabe huts. It takes 2 hours and 15 minutes from the summit to Pont Lamary.

- The southern orientation of the Petite Aiguille d'Ansabère routes allows for late-season climbing.
- This route covers 300m, but difficulties are concentrated in the 3 chimney crack pitches and the cave overhang.
- It is the most accessible route on the south face of the Petite Aiguille d'Ansabère, allowing observation of splendid routes on the spur, such as Le Spigolo (6a/A1 or 7b, 300m), Zutopistes (7a, 300m), Zélus vendus, zélus pendus (6c+/A1, 300m), and further to the right, Dernier Voyage (6c, 200m).

### Access

From Pau, go to Oloron Sainte Marie and follow the RN 134 towards Col du Somport. A few kilometers after Bedous, turn right towards Lescun. In the village, head towards Ansabère, and at the Pont de Mazouza, follow the track (in poor condition) to Pont Lamary.

### Accommodation

You can find an excellent gîte in Lescun at La Maison de la Montagne (0559347914), a hotel (0559347154), and a campsite one kilometer after Lescun.
