##Approach
From the Couvercle hut follow the path, (cairns,) to the Moine glacier.  Go straight up the glacier to the highest point, (crampons useful, especially for the last 50m.)

##Route
Climb a short pitch, (2), to a platform where the S ridge classic and the normal route separate.  One can leave the crampons and ice axe here if there is no snow on the route.

Go up a chimney on the extreme right of the platform then traverse to the right to a commerative plaque, (3b), abseil point during the descent.  Climb a second chimney, (3b) 

Continue by an easy and cairned path.  A little higher easy sections are interspersed with scrambling up to grade 2.  At about 3050m, a path goes to the left and passes through a gap, (large cairn nearby,) to reach a gully.  Make sure you go to the gully and do not follow a series of easy ledges, marked with cairns, which lead to the SE ridge and the Gendarme du But Héréditaire.
 
Having got into the gully, (the difficulty is finding the right place,) climb up the rocks, (well worn by climbers,) to the right of the gully, not difficult at first, then a typical Chamonix corner at a good 3c, which leads to a belay, (peg and sling) used for abseilling in descent.  Follow a ledge leftwards, (cairn,) then climb another little corner, (also awkward,) to reach a platform above the gully. 

Go up to the left of the gully then up the face, sometimes moving together.  To finish there are several alternatives:  get to the summit by the SE ridge, fairly strenuous, follow the SW ridge, as indicated in the guidebooks, or lastly up the S face, various lines possible.

##Descent
Basically follow the ascent route, with abseils only necessary at the 3c corner and the chimneys at the foot of the route. 

*For those that do not want to follow their ascent route:*
From the summit follow the SW ridge for a few metres only, then climb down a short chimney, which slants to the left. Take the easiest line as dictated by the terrain.  In each case it is best to traverse the gully at the same place as during the ascension. A 50m abseil descends the 3c chimney and reaches the cairned path.
*Another option is to go towards the pinnacle that is situated between the gully and the S ridge.  At the pinnacle follow a series of easy ledges, (cairns,) straight down at first then diagonally to the left to cross the gully. (a slab to down climb or abseil, slings in place.)  Cross the gully at the level of a large boulder, (which forms a shelter on the true left side of the gully.)  Climb over a crest just below this boulder, two horizontal cracks, one for the hands the other for the feet.  The rest of the descent is easier; follow the cairns and/or your instincts.*

The main challenges are the length of the route, the route finding and being at ease down climbing.
Remember if you are too long on the route, especially the down climbing, you risk to miss the last train from Montenvers.

## Acceso

Bajar desde el refugio de la Charpoua pasando al pie de la punta 3014m de l’Évêque, hasta la desembocadura del corredor Moine-Nonne (nevero persistente). Subir a la derecha al inicio de la canal hasta llegar a un pasamanos. Pasar luego un pequeño collado hacia la derecha y remontar pendientes herbosas hasta el pie de la vía.

Vía preciosa principalmente en fisura. El último largo es precioso, en un estilo completamente diferente de los demás largos, sobre todo en el desplome final donde 4 grandes movimientos. En este largo la dificultad obligada es la más difícil.

Evitar cuando la cornisa está nevada.

## Approach

From the Couvercle hut, follow eastwards a cairned path which climbs towards the Moine glacier. Go along its base, descending slightly, and traverse towards the S ridge. Join the ridge at a square notch.

## Route

*The route is fairly logical, passing from one side of the ridge to the other to take the best line. Just follow your instincts.*

Climb up to the notch. Traverse for several metres on the Talefre side and climb a chimney (3c/4a) which brings you back to the crest of the ridge. Follow the ridge (4b) on the Talefre side until a conical pinnacle. Cross to the Mer de Glace side. Climb a crack with a jammed block (4b) which brings you to the summit of the pinnacle. Continue on the Talefre side by traversing a large, flat slab. Descend to a gap on the Talèfre side and climb back up by a corner chimney (4c). Cross on the Mer de Glace side and follow the ridge, turning a first pinnacle on the Mer de Glace side and a second on the Talefre side to reach a narrow gap above a large gully on the Mer de Glace side.

Go into the gully by a 25m abseil and climb back up easily for 60m to reach a chimney/gully with a large boulder (4b) which leads back to the ridge. Pass onto the Talèfre side and gain a platform at the foot of a large pinnacle. Go onto the Mer de Glace side and turn the pinnacle by a gently descending ledge. Climb up a chimney crack with large boulders (4c) and follow the line of the ridge. Get onto the crest of the ridge by a corner (4b). Go onto the Talefre side and follow a little grassy ledge which leads to a red corner (4b). Regain the crest of the ridge and cross to the Mer de Glace side. Climb up the slopes above by an easy angled corner (4b) and some easy steps to reach the crest of the ridge again.

*Here you join the Classic S ridge route.*  
There is a red pinnacle with a large flat boulder on top. By a horizontal ledge on the left, reach the foot of a 70m chimney crack, which is to the left of a large pinnacle in the form of a “T” on the ridge. Climb it (flakes and wide crack 4b/c, 2 pitches). The belay is about 5m under the notch to the left of the pinnacle. Climb a wall (5c) and at the notch, descend 3m on the Talefre side, traverse on a ledge for 10m to reach the foot of a leftward leaning corner, climb it for 20m (3c) and exit onto a large platform.

Traverse on the Mer de Glace side for about 30m. Descend 2m and by a long stride to the left gain the foot of a flared corner. Climb it (5b, strenuous, wooden wedges and slings), then a smooth, narrow chimney (4c, awkward). Exit onto a good ledge (30m) and follow it leftwards. Climb down a little wall, then climb a large crack with boulders which can be taken on the outside (4c) to exit onto a good terrace. Follow a crack obliquely left until a triangular niche with a belay on a jammed block (4c, 30m). A small flake (3c) leads to the ridge at a large platform (with a view of both faces). Climb another small flake then a short chimney (3c) to reach a terrace at the foot of a little wall (5c). The exit to the left is easier (4c). Take the easiest line up the ridge to the summit, about 80m after the little wall.

## Descent

Descend the S face route. Take the easiest line by zig-zagging down stepped ledges for 200m. It is possible, but not essential, to make some short abseils. Trend leftwards (looking down) to gain a vague gully. Climb down this (3c) taking the easiest line by following the cairns. Many abseils are possible (up to 25m) but not essential. Come back to the right (looking down) and down climb (or abseil) onto the Moine Glacier.

Facing S and low altitude means the route is often in condition both early and late in the season.

It is possible, but not essential to make some short abseils. Trend leftwards, (looking down) to gain a vague gully. Climb down this (3c) taking the easiest line by following the cairns. Many abseils are possible (upto 25m) but not essential. Come back to the right, (looking down) an down climb (or abseil) onto the Moine Glacier.</p>

Miss Tique

Muy bonita clásica que ofrece vista preciosa sobre el Mer de Glace. Itinerario aéreo, estético y pronto en condiciones; concurrido.

### Acceso

Desde el refugio de Couvercle, llegar al glaciar de Moine por un camino hitado. Remontar el glaciar todo recto hacia el punto más alto (crampones útiles, 40° como mucho en los 50 últimos metros).

### Vía

#### Centro de la cara S

El inicio se hace por una pequeña cornisa oblicua bajo panzas amarillentas. Para llegar a esta cornisa, suele hacer falta hacer un corto largo (II). Seguir esta cornisa a la izquierda hasta su final. Lleva al centro de la cara, a la izquierda a un grande gendarme rojo. Subir pues en ligera ascendencia a la derecha gradas fáciles. Desde entonces, 2 alternativas:

1. La primera consiste en llegar a la izquierda a una chimenea de roca clara pulida. Subirla para llegar a una terraza (30 m, III+). Seguir por gradas oblicuas a la izquierda, luego flanqueando a la derecha para llegar a un corredor que lleva a la arista.
2. La segunda consiste en seguir esas gradas que llevan a una pared vertical que pasamos (20 m, V). Remontar la orilla izquierda de un corredor y pasarlo. Llegamos entonces al corredor que lleva a la arista.

Remontarlo y pasar 2 paredes, la primera a la derecha (III+) y la segunda de izquierda a derecha (III). 30 m bajo la arista, pasar el último resalte por una fisura-chimenea a la derecha, llena de lajas (40 m - III+).

#### Arista S

Llegamos así a la arista S al pie de un grande gendarme rojo terminado por una grande mesa rocosa. Remontar la arista directamente, sobre 40 m. Por una cornisa horizontal, llegar a la izquierda al pie de una fisura chimenea de 40 m ubicada a la izquierda del grande gendarme en forma de T que domina la arista. Remontarla (lajas y fisura ancha 4/4+, 2 largos). Reunión más o menos 5 m bajo la brecha a la izquierda del gendarme. Pasar una pared (5+) y en la brecha, bajar 3 m vertiente Talèfre, atravesar una cornisa sobre 10 m hasta el pie de un diedro inclinado hacia la izquierda, remontarlo sobre 20 m (3+) y salir en una ancha plataforma.

Atravesarla lado "Mer de Glace" sobre más o menos 15 m. Bajar 2 m y por un ancho paso hacia la izquierda y llegar a lo bajo de un diedro ensanchado. Remontarlo (V atlético, bicoins de madera y cinta), luego por una chimenea lisa y estrecha (IV+ pesado) salir en una cornisa buena (30 m), seguirla a la izquierda. Bajar una pequeña pared, luego subir una fisura ancha con bloques que podemos coger en exterior (4+) para salir en una buena terraza. Seguir una fisura oblicua a la izquierda hasta un nicho triangular con bloque empotrado para la reunión (IV+, 30 m). Una laja (III+) llega a la arista en una ancha plataforma (vista sobre la vertiente Mer de Glace y Talèfre). Remontar una laja y una corta chimenea (III+) y salir en una terraza al pie de una pequeña pared (V+). La salida a la izquierda es más fácil (IV+). Seguir a lo más fácil a la arista hasta la cumbre (más o menos 80 m de desnivel desde la pequeña pared). Un escape permite dejar la arista al nivel de esta pequeña pared (rápel con aros de cuerda, 15 m) y volver a la vía normal por una grande travesía en las cornisas.

### Descenso

*Mejor siguiendo los hitos, primero recto bajo la cumbre, luego tirando a la derecha. Casi todo se puede destrepar.* Desde la cumbre, destrepar al mismo S sobre una decena de metros para encontrar un rápel facultativo. Bajar zigzagueando recto bajo la cumbre sobre los 200 primeros metros, luego a la izquierda sobre 100 m (rápel posible en una fisura de 40 m más o menos - se puede sortear por un destrepe de 3+ a la izquierda). Tirar todavía a la izquierda luego llegar a la rimaya hacia la derecha. Un rápel de 40 m equipado permite si hace falta pasar fácilmente la rimaya.

Orientación al mismo S para la cara y la bajada, pronto en condición. Cuidado a las acumulaciones de nieve a inicio o final de temporada en la segunda parte del itinerario que, al llegar a la arista, se desarrolla sobre todo vertiente W. Hace falta buen sentido del itinerario en la primera parte. La segunda parte del itinerario, después de llegar a la arista, tiene todos los pasos difíciles del itinerario. La bajada necesita cuidado y saber leer el terreno.

### Approach

From the Couvercle hut you go along the Talefre glacier under the E face. After passing a pillar which comes down from the summit and then two chimneys, you reach a sloping corner at 50m to the right of the pillar. (You can see 4 or 5 pegs.)

### Route

5 to 7h

*Plenty of pegs in the first third of the route. The first two pitches are the most difficult (6a) and the best protected. After that some slabs then a corner to exit onto the spur, with pegs at the belays and the more difficult sections. In the second third you follow the spur, no in-situ gear. After the spur there are some pegs and two equipped belays to exit onto the crest of the ridge a few metres to the N of the summit.*

Trend leftwards, (looking down) to gain a vague gully. Climb down this (3c) taking the easiest line by following the cairns. Many abseils are possible (up to 25m) but not essential. Come back to the right, (looking down) and down climb (or abseil, 40m) onto the Moine Glacier.

One can start early as the sun arrives quickly. The first 2 pitches are the hardest. The 6a corner to reach the spur can be damp. The rest of the route just has some sections of 5.

<p>[toc 2 right] <em>Le massif du Mont-Blanc est un massif montagneux des Alpes franco-italiennes, où se dresse le mont Blanc, plus haut sommet d&#8217;Europe occidentale qui culmine à 4&#160;810,06&#160;m. Il est traversé par le tunnel du Mont-Blanc, entre Chamonix dans la vallée de l&#8217;Arve et Courmayeur dans la vallée d&#8217;Aoste.</em></p> <h2>Présentation</h2> <h3>Situation</h3> <p>Ce massif est relativement restreint en superficie puisqu&#8217;il s&#8217;étend sur seulement 400&#160;km[sup]2[/sup] environ, mais il empiète sur trois pays&#160;: il est situé en grande partie sur le département français de la Haute-Savoie, mais aussi de la Savoie, sur la Vallée d&#8217;Aoste italienne et le canton du Valais suisse.</p> <p>Il est très homogène, c&#8217;est-à-dire que peu de vallées entrecoupent le relief, si ce n&#8217;est le Val Veny en amont de Courmayeur, côté italien, qui isole quelque peu le sommet de Lancebranlette. C&#8217;est le lieu où se côtoie alpinisme difficile (Grand Pilier d&#8217;Angle]], Freney&#8230;) et facile ([[summits/37355/fr/mont-blanc#les-5-voies-normales|voie normale du Mon Blanc]], [[summits/39351|Pointe Lachenal]] et [[routes/53884|Arête des Cosmiques.</p> <h4>L&#8217;aiguille Verte, les Courtes</h4> <p>L&#8217;Aiguille Verte tient une place importante dans le massif tant elle attire l&#8217;œil depuis la vallée. Elle regorge de couloirs et arêtes réputées. Plus au Nord, ce sont les Droites et les Courtes dont la réputation des faces N n&#8217;est plus à faire. Leur face S accueille quant&#8217;à elle des itinéraires d&#8217;alpinisme plus classique.</p> <h4>Les aiguilles de Chamonix</h4> <p>Ce groupe de sommet va de l&#8217;aiguille du Midi jusqu&#8217;à l&#8217;aiguille des Grands Charmoz. C&#8217;est un endroit propice à de belles escalades modernes et anciennes.</p> <h4>Les Grandes Jorasses</h4> <p>Si on doit citer une face N du massif du Mont Blanc, ce sera celle-là. Une des plus réputée des Alpes.</p> <h4>L&#8217;aiguille d&#8217;Argentière et du Chardonnet</h4> <p>L&#8217;aiguille d&#8217;Argentière, tout comme celle du Chardonnet sont des petits massifs à eux tout seul&#160;; ils concentrent tout ce qu&#8217;on peut trouver en montagne&#160;: goulottes et courses glacières en versant N, traversée d&#8217;arête, escalade et ski de montagne. Assurément un beau coin.</p> <h2>Les activités de montagne</h2> <h3>Ski de randonnée</h3> <p>Le Mont-Blanc, de part sa grande surface glaciaire comporte plus d&#8217;itinéraires sérieux que n&#8217;importe quel autre massif français. C&#8217;est également un excellent massif pour la pente raide.
