Escalada sobre todo atlética, con muchos diedros y chimeneas. Es interesante y estética. Marcha relativamente compleja. Mantenida en el V. Si presenta algún tramo más fácil, tiene también muchos pasos de V+, y un largo de VI. No se puede depreciar la largura: hace falta escalar sobre 700 m de altura!

### Acceso
Remontar el Rognon de la Charpoua, luego atravesar el glaciar navegando cuanto mejor entre grietas y seracs. Llegar a una ancha cornisa horizontal, y seguirla hasta llegar a la cara S de Grand Dru entre 2 corredores grandes. Notar muy arriba un diedro cerrado por un fuerte desplome triangular: la vía inicia a la izquierda de su nivel.

### Vía
Desequipado, pero muchas posibilidades de reunión en sabinas o con fisureros. El corte de los largos es indicativo. Podemos combinar largos, pero cuidado al terreno: itinerario zigzagueando mucho en rocas quebradizas o angulosas que constituyen trampas eficaces para la cuerda.

Llegamos entonces a la reunión siguiente en la terraza (50 m / V+). |

Roca muy arenosa, graveras y pequeñas piedras en equilibrio, que salen quizás de un derrumbamiento de hace poco: el diedro (que termina en cornisa) llega a un conjunto de láminas grandes amontonadas, más o menos estables, y arenosas. |

| L15,III,30m | Notar un enorme bloque a mitad de aquel resalte, muy a la derecha del filo del pilar: por un destrepe fácil, o un rápel, llegar a una terraza buena más abajo de la brecha y al nivel de aquel bloque. Podemos ahorrar un largo atravesando horizontalmente, algún metro más abajo, desde la salida de la chimenea de L13. Atravesamos por una vena de cuarzo horizontal. |
| L16,V,45m | Subir un diedro (inicio vertical) luego gradas en ascendencia a la derecha hasta el pie del señor bloque. |
| L17,6a,45m | Subir el diedro que cierra la terraza a la derecha hasta una fisura horizontal que surca el bloque grande. Atravesar a la derecha para llegar a otra fisura y por algún paso atlético, primero recto para arriba, llegar a la terraza a la derecha bajo un ligero desplome (ver foto asociada al itinerario). |

| L21,6b,45m | Notar por encima 2 fisuras paralelas, oblicuas a la derecha que surcan una placa grande, lisa y vertical de 50 m de altura. El largo se desarrolla en las 2 fisuras que bordean la placa a la derecha. Iniciar en la fisura de izquierda pasando un pequeño desplome, luego llegar a la fisura de derecha. Remontarla sobre algún metro luego pasar otra vez en la fisura de izquierda, y seguirla hasta la altura de una terraza ubicada 3 m a la derecha (un fisurero atascado). Llegar a esta terraza por un paso de placa. *Este largo es extremadamente mantenido; su cotación de V+ en la reseña Vallot / Labande no tiene ningún sentido, a no ser rehusar usar el VI. Merece quizá 6b. Pasa también en A1 pero necesita friends de todos los tamaños (camalot 2-3 bajo, 1 a mitad, 0,4-0,5 arriba).* |

### Descenso
Seguir rampas vertiente Charpoua para volver progresivamente hacia la izquierda sobre un centenar de metros destrepando. Llegar así a los anillas del primer rápel, bajo un pequeño gendarme terminando por un bloque. La línea de rápel es continua hasta el glaciar (muchas posibilidades de reunión); las reuniones primero están alejadas hacia la izquierda. Cuando llegamos al corredor grande que sale del collado de Drus, alternan entre las orillas. Las 2 reuniones están muy orilla derecha.

Bajar luego al glaciar a lo más fácil, bien orilla derecha para volver a la huella de subida, bien atravesando muy a la izquierda para bajar directamente (*módulo* las grietas) hacia el Rognon de la Charpoua. (Alternativa orilla izquierda más clásica).

- Esta vía también se llama *Voie des Auvergnats* o *Vía Collangettes*. en la reseña OHM.
- Las cotaciones de la reseña Piola están demasiado de bajas.

## Approach

It is recommended to check out the glacier the night before. Go up the Charpoua rock outcrop to about 3000m altitude. Traverse the glacier, go around some big crevasses to reach the foot of the S face of the Grand Dru by a long, horizontal ledge.

## Route

**The Petit Dru**  
Traverse leftwards to reach a large gully coming down from point 3308m on the Flammes de Pierre ridge. Climb up it until the ridge, then follow this to the right. Climb a chimney leading to a square cut gap at the foot of Pinnacle 3361m, to join the obvious crest of the SW ridge. Follow the ridge, which steepens and becomes indistinct as part of the face, by a series of chimneys and cracks.  
2 key sections:

- The chimney with a jammed block with an exit onto an exposed slab in the first third of the ascension.
- The slab with a thin crack which leads up to a vein of quartz in the last third of the ascension.

A pitch and a half before the summit, traverse to the right by a narrow, exposed ledge, (above a slot in the rocks,) to go around the rib and reach an obvious gully which leads to the Virgin, (summit).

**Traverse to the Grand Dru**  
Go down to the gap between the Drus, to start the climb up the Grand Dru. Climb 5-6m up a thin crack to reach a ledge which is followed to the right, then leave it for a flake leading to a ledge on the left, belay. Here starts the “Z”, which goes up the overhanging face of the Grand Dru by a series of slabs, cracks and a flake hand traverse. Belay on a small step, (often snow covered) overlooking the drop into the N couloir. There remains just one pitch, which can be troublesome, the “bent” chimney, (often iced up,) protected by a fixed, knotted rope, well back into the depths of the chimney. Climb it by chimneying, or jamming, or by whatever method, with or without the rucksack. The second part of the chimney, after the elbow bend, is climbed using a flake for handholds.  
End of the difficulties.

## Descent of the Grand Dru by the SE side

Follow some ramps on the Charpoua side, exposed, to come back progressively to the left in about 100m of down climbing. Reach the rings of the first abseil, under a little pinnacle with a boulder on top. The abseils lead down to the glacier, the abseil points always being to the left, (looking outwards.) Careful, however, with the last abseil, a full 50m, which puts you onto the glacier. There is a real risk of getting the ropes jammed. Perhaps take an intermediary abseil. From the top of the glacier, there is one more abseil to pass the bergschrund, (difficult to see the slings under the snow and rocks.) Descend the glacier on its true right side until you reach your approach tracks which went towards the starting ledge.

- Easy climbing of 2 and 3 up to the Flammes de Pierre ridge, from where the climbing is much harder, frequent sections of 4b to 5c, especially if you miss the best line. The climbing is strenuous and sustained, though with lots of ledges on the Petit Dru, more exposed for the Grand Dru.
- The main difficulty is finding the best way. There is not much gear in place and at each ledge there may be a number of chimneys or cracks to choose from, some maybe blocked with snow or ice.
- Retreat is difficult after the gap between the Drus. Make sure the weather is stable.
- According to the hut warden, less than 8 parties have managed the route in guidebook time (11 to 13h) in the last 4 years.

Petit Dru

## Approach

From the Charpoua hut, go up to a large horizontal ledge at the foot of the S pillar.

## Route

Slabs at 4b diagonally to the left until a terrace at the foot of the first step, a cliff of 80m. A chimney with two parallel cracks, (5b/c), exposed. Then a succession of cracks and corners at 4c to 5c until a narrow gully which descends to the left towards the Dru Couloir. Cross the couloir and follow a series of cracks and corners, (4b and 5b) until the foot of the Trident. By a ledge to the right, climb a chimney, (5b) to a "window", (gap) which marks the end of the second step. A series of short walls (50m at 4b) leads to a damp chimney, cross it (4b) at the level of an avoidable jammed boulder. Then again a series of chimney corners and cracks (together between 4b and 5b) until a large terrace at the foot of the final step.

Go towards the "Pilier Rouge", (red pillar) crack on the right, pass under an overhang and go around a large boulder. Get to the rib of the Pilier Rouge ridge. Corner of 30m (4c), small overhang, and runnels the length of a vertical wall (5c, exposed.) Some small corners at 4b lead to the final ridge, then without difficulty to the summit by steps/ledges.

## Descent

From the Grand Dru, follow some ramps on the Charpoua, (E) side, exposed, to come back progressively to the left in about 100m of down climbing. Reach the rings, (bolt) of the first abseil, under a little pinnacle with a boulder on top. The abseils lead down to the glacier, the abseil points always being to the left, (looking outwards.) Careful, however, with the last abseil, a full 50m, which puts you onto the glacier. There is a real risk of getting the ropes jammed. Perhaps take an intermediary abseil. From the top of the glacier, there is one more abseil to pass the bergschrund, (difficult to see the slings under the snow and rocks.) Descend the glacier on its true right side until you reach your approach tracks which went towards the starting ledge.

- Excellent rock, most of the route is protected from stonefall.
- Climbing strenuous and sustained.
- Some sections often damp, ledges with snow.

<p>[toc 2 right] <em>Le massif du Mont-Blanc est un massif montagneux des Alpes franco-italiennes, où se dresse le mont Blanc, plus haut sommet d&#8217;Europe occidentale qui culmine à 4&#160;810,06&#160;m. Il est traversé par le tunnel du Mont-Blanc, entre Chamonix dans la vallée de l&#8217;Arve et Courmayeur dans la vallée d&#8217;Aoste.</em></p> <h2>Présentation</h2> <h3>Situation</h3> <p>Ce massif est relativement restreint en superficie puisqu&#8217;il s&#8217;étend sur seulement 400&#160;km[sup]2[/sup] environ, mais il empiète sur trois pays&#160;: il est situé en grande partie sur le département français de la Haute-Savoie, mais aussi de la Savoie, sur la Vallée d&#8217;Aoste italienne et le canton du Valais suisse.</p> <p>Il est très homogène, c&#8217;est-à-dire que peu de vallées entrecoupent le relief, si ce n&#8217;est le Val Veny en amont de Courmayeur, côté italien, qui isole quelque peu le sommet de Lancebranlette. En effet, les glaciers occupent les dépressions jusque bas dans les vallées, et les torrents qu&#8217;ils alimentent ne suffisent pas à éroder le massif.</p> <p>On peut diviser le massif en plusieurs zones&#160;:</p> <ul> <li>les dômes de Miage]] et [[summits/176147|Tré-la-Tête&#160;;</li> <li>le groupe central, qui comprend le sommet du mont Blanc lui-même&#160;;</li> <li>l&#8217;aiguille Verte]], les [[summits/38628|Droites&#160;;</li> <li>les aiguilles de Chamonix, depuis l&#8217;aiguille du Midi jusqu&#8217;à l&#8217;aiguille des Grands Charmoz&#160;;</li> <li>les Grandes Jorasses&#160;;</li> <li>le groupe de l&#8217;aiguille d&#8217;Argentière.</li> </ul> <p>Les vallées principales qui l&#8217;entourent sont reliées par le tunnel du mont Blanc et le col du Petit-Saint-Bernard (entre l&#8217;Italie et la France) et le col des Montets via Vallorcine (entre la France et la Suisse).</p> <p>Il est entouré des aiguilles Rouges]] au nord-ouest (rive droite de l&#8217;Arve), du massif du [[areas/14404|Giffre]] au nord, des [[areas/14437|Alpes valaisannes]] à l&#8217;est, des [[areas/14424|Alpes grées]] au sud-est et du massif du [[areas/14400|Beaufortain au sud-ouest.</p> <h3>Géologie</h3> <p>Le massif du Mont-Blanc fait partie des massifs cristallins externes des Alpes. Il est essentiellement granitique, mais l&#8217;on y trouve également des affleurement de gneiss, selon cette répartition&#160;: - le cœur du massif (vallée Blanche) et l&#8217;est (glacier du Tour, glacier du Trient) sont dans le pluton granitique - la partie occidentale (sommet du mont Blanc lui-même, dôme du Goûter, le secteur de Tré-la-Tête) est constituée principalement de gneiss. Ce sont en fait d&#8217;anciennes roches hercyniennes reprises dans l&#8217;orogenèse alpine.</p> <h2>Le Massif</h2> <h3>Les différents Groupes</h3> <h4>Les dômes de Miage et Tré-la-Tête</h4> <p>Secteur plus sauvage, il abrite de belles courses d&#8217;arête&#160;: traversée des Dômes de Miage]] et [[routes/57924|traversée Tré la Tête - Dôme des Glaciers.</p> <h4>Groupe central&#160;: Mont Blanc</h4> <p>Partie du massif très courue, son accès est grandement facilité par le téléphérique de l&#8217;aiguille du Midi. En été, le col du Midi est le lieu de rencontre de tout les types d&#8217;alpinisme. C&#8217;est le lieu où se côtoie alpinisme difficile (Grand Pilier d&#8217;Angle]], Freney&#8230;) et facile ([[summits/37355/fr/mont-blanc#les-5-voies-normales|voie normale du Mon Blanc]], [[summits/39351|Pointe Lachenal]] et [[routes/53884|Arête des Cosmiques.</p> <h4>L&#8217;aiguille Verte, les Courtes</h4> <p>L&#8217;Aiguille Verte tient une place importante dans le massif tant elle attire l&#8217;œil depuis la vallée. Elle regorge de couloirs et arêtes réputées. Plus au Nord, ce sont les Droites et les Courtes dont la réputation des faces N n&#8217;est plus à faire. Leur face S accueille quant&#8217;à elle des itinéraires d&#8217;alpinisme plus classique.</p> <h4>Les aiguilles de Chamonix</h4> <p>Ce groupe de sommet va de l&#8217;aiguille du Midi jusqu&#8217;à l&#8217;aiguille des Grands Charmoz. C&#8217;est un endroit propice à de belles escalades modernes et anciennes.</p> <h4>Les Grandes Jorasses</h4> <p>Si on doit citer une face N du massif du Mont Blanc, ce sera celle-là. Une des plus réputée des Alpes.</p> <h4>L&#8217;aiguille d&#8217;Argentière et du Chardonnet</h4> <p>L&#8217;aiguille d&#8217;Argentière, tout comme celle du Chardonnet sont des petits massifs à eux tout seul&#160;; ils concentrent tout ce qu&#8217;on peut trouver en montagne&#160;: goulottes et courses glacières en versant N, traversée d&#8217;arête, escalade et ski de montagne. Assurément un beau coin.</p> <h2>Les activités de montagne</h2> <h3>Ski de randonnée</h3> <p>Le Mont-Blanc, de part sa grande surface glaciaire comporte plus d&#8217;itinéraires sérieux que n&#8217;importe quel autre massif français. C&#8217;est également un excellent massif pour la pente raide. En effet, les nombreuses remontés mécaniques permettent d&#8217;accéder facilement à de belles pentes.</p> <h3>Alpinisme</h3> <p>Chamonix est la Mecque mondialement connue de l&#8217;alpinisme.</p> <h4>Neige/Glace/Mixte</h4> <h5>Alpinisme classique</h5> <ul> <li>Mont blanc</li> </ul> <h5>Goulottes</h5> <p>Le massif du Mont-Blanc propose de nombreuses goulottes dont les principaux sommets sont&#160;:</p> <ul> <li>Aiguille du Chardonnet&#160;: belles goulottes de difficultés modérées</li> <li>Aiguille du Midi&#160;: goulottes variées facilement accessibles grâce au téléphérique</li> <li>Grandes Jorasses&#160;: goulottes engagées dans une face de légende</li> <li>Mont Blanc du Tacul&#160;: goulottes faciles d&#8217;accès mais fréquentés</li> <li>Triangle du Tacul&#160;: goulottes &#8220;école&#8221;</li> </ul> <h4>Rocher haute montagne</h4> <p>Le granite Chamoniard n&#8217;est plus a présenté et on peut citer quelques haut lieu de l&#8217;escalade Chamoniarde&#160;:</p> <ul> <li>Envers des Aiguilles</li> <li>Grand Capucin</li> </ul> <p>Malheureusement, le massif pâti de l&#8217;absence d&#8217;une mise à jour d&#8217;un topo rocheux exhaustif.
