Le Gasherbrum II fut baptisé K4 (signifiant quatrième pic du Karakoram) par Thomas George Montgomerie en 1856 lors de sa reconnaissance des pics du Karakoram. C’est le premier 8000 du Karakoram à avoir été gravi en hiver.
